桐朋学園の学生により2006年に結成。軽井沢八月祭、宮崎国際音楽祭、プロジェクトQ、JTが育てるアンサンブルシリーズ他、国内の多数の演奏会、音楽祭に参加。2008年ミュンヘンARD国際音楽コンクールにて第3位、日本人の団体として東京クヮルテット以来38年ぶりの入賞を果たす。2009年日本音楽財団の協力で王子ホールにて正式なデビュー公演を行う。原田幸一郎、東京クヮルテットのメンバー等から指導を受ける。

2010年春より拠点をスイス・バーゼルに移し、バーゼル音楽院にてライナー・シュミット(ハーゲン四重奏団)のもとで研鑽を積む。南仏ボニユー音楽祭、ドイツ・シュヴェツィンゲンSWR音楽祭、ドイツ・ボイゲン城でのコンサートへの出演など、ヨーロッパでも活動の場を広げる。京都・青山音楽賞受賞。2011年バーゼル・オーケストラ協会(BOG)コンクールにて"エクゼコー"賞受賞、第7回大阪国際室内楽コンクール弦楽四重奏部門第3位。2008、2010、2011年度松尾学術振興財団より助成を受ける。
 

2012年6月バーゼル音楽院を修了し、2013年2月より拠点を日本に活動。
 

2016年には結成10周年を迎え、東京・春・音楽祭、第一生命ホール、日本モーツァルト協会例会、紀尾井ホール等で演奏。加えて、2017年1月からはiichiko総合文化センター(大分)でベートーヴェン全曲演奏会全6回シリーズがスタート。
2024年6月サントリーホールチェンバーミュージック・ガーデンに出演。

2017年からスタートしたベートーヴェンの弦楽四重奏曲全曲録音(全8集)が2025年に完了し、fontecよりリリース。

これまでにボザール・トリオの創設者メナヘム・プレスラー(ピアノ)をはじめ、小林道夫(ピアノ)、アレクサンダー・ロマノフスキー(ピアノ)、ミッシャ・マイスキー(チェロ)、リチャード・ストルツマン(クラリネット)、ポール・メイエ(クラリネット)、名古屋フィルハーモニー交響楽団、九州交響楽団他共演。

﨑谷 直人 Naoto Sakiya, 1st violinist
87年生まれ。ケルン音大、パリ音楽院、桐朋学園ソリストディプロマを経て、バーゼル音楽院修了。ノボシビルスク国際コンクール第1位、メニューイン国際コンクール第3位。東京フィル、京都市響、神奈川フィル、バーゼル響、ノボシビルスク・フィル等と共演。また、東京フィル、九州響、読売日響などにゲスト首席、コンマスに招かれる。宮崎国際音楽祭、軽井沢八月祭、王子ホールMAROカンパニー、シュヴェツィンゲンSWR等、国内外の演奏会に出演。原田幸一郎、ジェラール・プーレ、ロラン・ドガレイユ、ダニエル・ゼペックの各氏に師事。現在は、ソリストとして活動中。06年ウェールズ弦楽四重奏団を結成。

三原 久遠 Hisao Mihara, 2nd violinist
89年生まれ。桐朋学園大学を経て、バーゼル音楽院修了。プロジェクトQ、小澤征爾音楽塾、若い人のための「サイトウ・キネン室内楽勉強会」に参加。イヴリー・ギトリス、コリヤ・ブラッハー、ダニエル・ゲーデのマスタークラスを受講。ヴァイオリンを青木晶央、茂木佳子、澤和樹、木野雅之、藤原浜雄、室内楽を東京クヮルテット、原田幸一郎、今井信子、原田禎夫、毛利伯郎、指揮を高関健の各氏に師事。現在、東京都交響楽団 第2ヴァイオリン副首席奏者。09年ウェールズ弦楽四重奏団に加入。
 

横溝 耕一 Koichi Yokomizo, violist
86年生まれ。桐朋学園大学卒業。第58回全日本学生音楽コンクール東京大会高校の部入選。06年ウェールズ弦楽四重奏団を結成し、ビオラ奏者として09年まで活動。学内における室内楽試験を首席で修了。宮崎国際音楽祭、サイトウ・キネン・フェスティバル松本等に参加。これまでにヴァイオリンを小川有紀子、小森谷巧、堀正文、徳永二男の各氏に、室内楽を徳永二男、毛利伯郎、原田幸一郎、東京クヮルテットの各氏に師事。現在、NHK交響楽団 第1ヴァイオリン次席奏者。13年ウェールズ弦楽四重奏団に復帰。
 

富岡 廉太郎 Rentaro Tomioka, cellist
86年生まれ。9歳よりチェロを始める。桐朋女子高等学校音楽科、桐朋学園大学を経て、バーゼル音楽院修了。札幌ジュニアチェロコンクール特別奨励賞。いしかわミュージックアカデミーIMA音楽賞受賞。若い人のための「サイトウ・キネン室内楽勉強会」、小澤征爾音楽塾オペラ・プロジェクト、プロジェクトQ等に参加。主要オーケストラの客演首席を始めとし、国内外多数のコンサート、音楽祭に出演。上原与四郎、毛利伯郎の各氏に師事。14年6月から17年3月まで、東京シティ・フィルハーモニック管弦楽団 客員首席奏者を務める。17年11月より読売日本交響楽団 首席チェロ奏者。06年ウェールズ弦楽四重奏団を結成。

The quartet was formed in 2006 by students of Toho Gakuen School of Music. They have participated in numerous concerts and music festivals throughout Japan, including the Karuizawa August Festival, Miyazaki International Music Festival, Project Q, and the JT-Nurtured Ensemble Series. In 2008, they won Third Prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, becoming the first Japanese ensemble in 38 years since the Tokyo Quartet to receive an award at the competition. In 2009, with the support of the Japan Music Foundation, they gave their official debut concert at Oji Hall. They have studied under Koichiro Harada and members of the Tokyo Quartet.

In the spring of 2010, the quartet relocated its base to Basel, Switzerland, where they studied at the Basel Academy of Music under Rainer Schmidt of the Hagen Quartet. They expanded their activities throughout Europe, appearing at the Bonnieux Music Festival in southern France, the Schwetzingen SWR Festival in Germany, and concerts at Schloss Beuggen in Germany. They received the Kyoto Aoyama Music Award. In 2011, they won the “Ex Aequo” Prize at the Basel Orchestra Society (BOG) Competition and Third Prize in the String Quartet Division at the 7th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. They also received grants from the Matsuo Academic Promotion Foundation in 2008, 2010, and 2011.

After graduating from the Basel Academy of Music in June 2012, they resumed activities based in Japan from February 2013.

In 2016, the quartet celebrated its 10th anniversary with performances at the Tokyo Spring Festival, Dai-ichi Life Hall, the Japan Mozart Society, and Kioi Hall. In addition, beginning in January 2017, they launched a six-concert complete Beethoven string quartet cycle at the iichiko General Cultural Center in Oita. In June 2024, they appeared at the Suntory Hall Chamber Music Garden festival.

Their complete recording project of Beethoven’s String Quartets, launched in 2017 and spanning eight volumes, was completed in 2025 and released by fontec.

The quartet has collaborated with distinguished artists including Menahem Pressler, founder of the Beaux Arts Trio; pianists Michio Kobayashi and Alexander Romanovsky; cellist Mischa Maisky; clarinetists Richard Stoltzman and Paul Meyer; as well as the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra and Kyushu Symphony Orchestra.

Naoto Sakiya, 1st Violinist
Born in 1987. After studying at the Cologne University of Music, the Paris Conservatoire, and completing the Soloist Diploma at Toho Gakuen School of Music, he graduated from the Basel Academy of Music. He won First Prize at the Novosibirsk International Competition and Third Prize at the Menuhin International Competition. He has appeared as a soloist with orchestras including the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra, Basel Symphony Orchestra, and Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also been invited as guest concertmaster and principal player by ensembles such as the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Kyushu Symphony Orchestra, and Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra. He has performed at numerous concerts and festivals in Japan and abroad, including the Miyazaki International Music Festival, Karuizawa August Festival, Oji Hall MARO Company concerts, and the Schwetzingen SWR Festival. He studied under Koichiro Harada, Gérard Poulet, Roland Daugareil, and Daniel Zeppek. Currently active as a soloist. He co-founded the Wales String Quartet in 2006.

Hisao Mihara, 2nd Violinist
Born in 1989. After graduating from Toho Gakuen School of Music, he completed his studies at the Basel Academy of Music. He participated in Project Q, the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy, and the Saito Kinen Chamber Music Study Group for Young Musicians. He attended masterclasses by Ivry Gitlis, Kolja Blacher, and Daniel Gaede. He studied violin under Akio Aoki, Yoshiko Mogi, Kazuki Sawa, Masayuki Kino, and Hamao Fujiwara; chamber music under the Tokyo Quartet, Koichiro Harada, Nobuko Imai, Yoshio Harada, and Hakuro Mori; and conducting under Ken Takaseki. He is currently Associate Principal Second Violin of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. He joined the Wales String Quartet in 2009.

Koichi Yokomizo, Violist
Born in 1986. Graduated from Toho Gakuen School of Music. He was a finalist in the high school division of the 58th All Japan Student Music Competition Tokyo Competition. He co-founded the Wales String Quartet in 2006 and performed as its violist until 2009. He graduated top of his class in chamber music examinations at the university. He has participated in the Miyazaki International Music Festival and the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto, among others. He studied violin under Yukiko Ogawa, Takumi Komoriya, Masafumi Hori, and Tsugio Tokunaga; and chamber music under Tsugio Tokunaga, Hakuro Mori, Koichiro Harada, and the Tokyo Quartet. He is currently Assistant Principal First Violin of the NHK Symphony Orchestra. He rejoined the Wales String Quartet in 2013.

Rentaro Tomioka, Cellist
Born in 1986. Began studying the cello at the age of nine. After attending the Music Department of Toho Girls’ High School and Toho Gakuen School of Music, he graduated from the Basel Academy of Music. He received the Special Encouragement Award at the Sapporo Junior Cello Competition and the IMA Music Award at the Ishikawa Music Academy. He participated in the Saito Kinen Chamber Music Study Group for Young Musicians, the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy Opera Project, and Project Q. In addition to serving as guest principal cellist for major orchestras, he has appeared at numerous concerts and music festivals in Japan and abroad. He studied under Yoshiro Uehara and Hakuro Mori. From June 2014 to March 2017, he served as Guest Principal Cellist of the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra. Since November 2017, he has been Principal Cellist of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra. He co-founded the Wales String Quartet in 2006.
