桐朋学園の学生により2006年に結成。軽井沢八月祭、宮崎国際音楽祭、プロジェクトQ、JTが育てるアンサンブルシリーズ他、国内の多数の演奏会、音楽祭に参加。2008年ミュンヘンARD国際音楽コンクールにて第3位、日本人の団体として東京クヮルテット以来38年ぶりの入賞を果たす。2009年日本音楽財団の協力で王子ホールにて正式なデビュー公演を行う。原田幸一郎、東京クヮルテットのメンバー等から指導を受ける。

2010年春より拠点をスイス・バーゼルに移し、バーゼル音楽院にてライナー・シュミット(ハーゲン四重奏団)のもとで研鑽を積む。南仏ボニユー音楽祭、ドイツ・シュヴェツィンゲンSWR音楽祭、ドイツ・ボイゲン城でのコンサートへの出演など、ヨーロッパでも活動の場を広げる。京都・青山音楽賞受賞。2011年バーゼル・オーケストラ協会(BOG)コンクールにて"エクゼコー"賞受賞、第7回大阪国際室内楽コンクール弦楽四重奏部門第3位。2008、2010、2011年度松尾学術振興財団より助成を受ける。
 

2012年6月バーゼル音楽院を修了し、2013年2月より拠点を日本に活動。
 

2016年には結成10周年を迎え、東京・春・音楽祭、第一生命ホール、日本モーツァルト協会例会、紀尾井ホール等で演奏。加えて、2017年1月からはiichiko総合文化センター(大分)でベートーヴェン全曲演奏会全6回シリーズがスタート。
2024年6月サントリーホールチェンバーミュージック・ガーデンに出演。

2017年からスタートしたベートーヴェンの弦楽四重奏曲全曲録音(全8集)が2025年に完了し、fontecよりリリース。

これまでにボザール・トリオの創設者メナヘム・プレスラー(ピアノ)をはじめ、小林道夫(ピアノ)、アレクサンダー・ロマノフスキー(ピアノ)、ミッシャ・マイスキー(チェロ)、リチャード・ストルツマン(クラリネット)、ポール・メイエ(クラリネット)、名古屋フィルハーモニー交響楽団、九州交響楽団他共演。

﨑谷 直人 Naoto Sakiya, 1st violinist
87年生まれ。ケルン音大、パリ音楽院、桐朋学園ソリストディプロマを経て、バーゼル音楽院修了。ノボシビルスク国際コンクール第1位、メニューイン国際コンクール第3位。東京フィル、京都市響、神奈川フィル、バーゼル響、ノボシビルスク・フィル等と共演。また、東京フィル、九州響、読売日響などにゲスト首席、コンマスに招かれる。宮崎国際音楽祭、軽井沢八月祭、王子ホールMAROカンパニー、シュヴェツィンゲンSWR等、国内外の演奏会に出演。原田幸一郎、ジェラール・プーレ、ロラン・ドガレイユ、ダニエル・ゼペックの各氏に師事。現在は、ソリストとして活動中。06年ウェールズ弦楽四重奏団を結成。

三原 久遠 Hisao Mihara, 2nd violinist
89年生まれ。桐朋学園大学を経て、バーゼル音楽院修了。プロジェクトQ、小澤征爾音楽塾、若い人のための「サイトウ・キネン室内楽勉強会」に参加。イヴリー・ギトリス、コリヤ・ブラッハー、ダニエル・ゲーデのマスタークラスを受講。ヴァイオリンを青木晶央、茂木佳子、澤和樹、木野雅之、藤原浜雄、室内楽を東京クヮルテット、原田幸一郎、今井信子、原田禎夫、毛利伯郎、指揮を高関健の各氏に師事。現在、東京都交響楽団 第2ヴァイオリン副首席奏者。09年ウェールズ弦楽四重奏団に加入。
 

横溝 耕一 Koichi Yokomizo, violist
86年生まれ。桐朋学園大学卒業。第58回全日本学生音楽コンクール東京大会高校の部入選。06年ウェールズ弦楽四重奏団を結成し、ビオラ奏者として09年まで活動。学内における室内楽試験を首席で修了。宮崎国際音楽祭、サイトウ・キネン・フェスティバル松本等に参加。これまでにヴァイオリンを小川有紀子、小森谷巧、堀正文、徳永二男の各氏に、室内楽を徳永二男、毛利伯郎、原田幸一郎、東京クヮルテットの各氏に師事。現在、NHK交響楽団 第1ヴァイオリン次席奏者。13年ウェールズ弦楽四重奏団に復帰。
 

富岡 廉太郎 Rentaro Tomioka, cellist
86年生まれ。9歳よりチェロを始める。桐朋女子高等学校音楽科、桐朋学園大学を経て、バーゼル音楽院修了。札幌ジュニアチェロコンクール特別奨励賞。いしかわミュージックアカデミーIMA音楽賞受賞。若い人のための「サイトウ・キネン室内楽勉強会」、小澤征爾音楽塾オペラ・プロジェクト、プロジェクトQ等に参加。主要オーケストラの客演首席を始めとし、国内外多数のコンサート、音楽祭に出演。上原与四郎、毛利伯郎の各氏に師事。14年6月から17年3月まで、東京シティ・フィルハーモニック管弦楽団 客員首席奏者を務める。17年11月より読売日本交響楽団 首席チェロ奏者。06年ウェールズ弦楽四重奏団を結成。

​VSQ was formed in 2006 by students of Toho Gakuen School of Music and has performed at the Karuizawa August Festival, Miyazaki International Music Festival, Project Q, JT Fostered Ensemble Series and many other concerts and music festivals in Japan. 

In 2008, the group won the third prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, the first Japanese group to win the prize in 38 years since the Tokyo Quartet. In 2009, the quartet made its official debut at Oji Hall with the cooperation of the Nippon Music Foundation. VSQ has received instruction from Koichiro Harada, members of the Tokyo Quartet, and others.

 

In the spring of 2010, They moved to Basel, Switzerland to study with Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet) at the Musik-akademie der Stadt Basel. also expanded their activities in Europe, performing at the Bonnieux Festival in southern France, the Schwetzingen SWR Festival in Germany, and a concert at the Boigen Castle in Germany. They were awarded the Kyoto Aoyama Music Prize, the “Execor” prize at the Basel Orchestra Society (BOG) Competition in 2011, and the third prize in the string quartet division at the 7th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. In 2008, 2010, and in 2011, grant from the Matsuo Foundation for the Promotion of Science.

 

In June 2012, they completed their studies at the Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel, and in February 2013, they moved to Japan, performing at the Tokyo Spring Music Festival in March. in April, they performed their string quartet No. 2 “Flare” (2010) at Dai Fujikura's solo exhibition at Hakuju Hall, receiving a favorable response. in October, they gave a full-scale recital at Kioi Hall, which was a great success.  Since March 2014, they have been in charge of a three-part series at Hakuju Hall as a resident artist. In the second series in October 2014, they performed with Taira Kaneko (Principal, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra), who also won the third prize at the 2008 ARD International Music Competition in Munich, and in July 2015,they performed with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in a recital on the album fontec. They also performed with him on his debut CD released by fontec in July 2015. 

They also participated in a public recording of NHK-FM's “Best of Classics,” and their concert were broadcast nationwide on NHK-BS Premium's “Classic Club” in September. They also appeared on NHK's “Masterpieces Album".

 

In 2016, the group celebrated its 10th anniversary and performed at the Tokyo Spring Music Festival, Dai-ichi Seimei Hall, Japan Mozart Society meetings, Kioi Hall, and other venues. In addition, in January 2017, the orchestra began series of six concerts of Beethoven's complete works at the iichiko Cultural Center (Oita), and a recording project of the complete works is currently underway at fontec. In April 2017,they appeared as soloist in the subscription concert of the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra.​ They have performed with renowned musicians such as Menahem Pressler (piano), founder of the Beaux Arts Trio, Michio Kobayashi (piano), Richard Stoltzman (clarinet), Paul Maye (clarinet), and Alexander Romanovsky (piano).
