2歳からピアノを始める。
4歳で映画「風の谷のナウシカ」の劇中歌『ナウシカ・レクイエム』を歌う。
6歳からNHK 東京児童合唱団に所属。
2005年韓国映画「トンマッコルへようこそ」テーマ曲によりソロ活動を本格化。
2007年日産スカイラインCM 曲『I will be』では作詞も手がける。
2008年宮崎駿監督「崖の上のポニョ」のイメージアルバム収録『ひまわりの家の輪舞曲』をうたう。また、この年リリースされた DAISHI DANCE『the ジブリ set』に、麻衣がうたう『君をのせて』が収録。
2011年7月に全世界で公開された映画「ハリーポッターと死の秘宝 Part2」のオープニングテーマを、同年 12月の NHKスペシャルドラマ「坂の上の雲」第3部主題歌『Stand Alone』をうたう。
「マレフィセント」日本語版主題歌『Once Upon a Dream ~いつか夢で~』、 「シンデレラ」日本語版エンドソング『夢はひそかに(Duet version)』と、ディズニー映画の作詞を手がける。

1996年に結成された女声合唱団リトルキャロルを主宰。
2017年パリから始まった「Joe Hisaishi Symphonic Concert: Music from Films of Hayao Miyazaki」世界ツアーにソリストとして参加。
2022年には、ニューヨークRadio City Concert Hall、シアトル公演に出演。
Started playing the piano at the age of 2. At the age of 4, she sang “Nausicaa Requiem” in the movie “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind”.
From the age of 6, he has been a member of NHK Tokyo Children's Chorus.
In 2005,she began her solo career in earnest with the theme song for the Korean movie "Welcome to Tongmakkol.
She also wrote the lyrics for the song “I will be” for the Nissan Skyline commercial in 2007.
In 2008, she sang “Himawari no ie no rondo” for Hayao Miyazaki's “Ponyo on the Cliff,” which was included in his image album. Also, DAISHI DANCE's “the Ghibli set” released in the same year included “Kimi no ono set” sung by Mai.
She sang the opening theme song for the movie “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2,” which was released worldwide in July 2011, and “Stand Alone,” the theme song for the third part of the NHK special drama “Clouds Over the Hill” in December of the same year.
She has also written lyrics for Disney movies, including “Once Upon a Dream” for the Japanese version of “Maleficent” and “Cinderella” end song “Yume wa Hisokani (Duet version)” for the Japanese version of “Cinderella”.
She is the Music Goodwill Ambassador of Nakano City, Nagano Prefecture. In 1996, she formed and leads a women’s chorus “Little Carols, She participated as a soloist in the “Joe Hisaishi Symphonic Concert: Music from the Films of Hayao Miyazaki” world tour that began in Paris in 2017. In 2022, she performed at Radio City Concert Hall in New York and in Seattle.
